Texture & Stencil Paint — Complete Guide

Texture and stencil paints transform plain walls into stunning 3D feature walls and decorative accents. Unlike standard flat emulsion paints, these specialty finishes use thicker viscosities, mineral aggregates, glass beads, metallic flakes, and pattern overlays to create rich, tactile and visually dramatic effects — from rustic stone and venetian plaster to silk shimmer, suede and stencil motifs.

India’s decorative wall paint market has exploded since 2010, led by Asian Paints Royale Play, Berger Illusions, Dulux Designer Series and dedicated boutique brands like Volkem, MyDecoArts and ColorRich. Most products are based on premium acrylic emulsion + special effect additives.

What are Texture & Stencil Paints?

Texture paint is a thick paint or special coating that creates a raised, tactile surface effect — granular, rough, smooth-stone, sand, lime-wash, or pattern. It typically contains acrylic binder + extra fillers (silica, marble dust, glass beads), and is applied with trowel, spatula, sponge, special rollers or spray.

Stencil paint uses cardboard / vinyl / plastic templates with cut-out designs that allow paint to be applied through the openings, creating repeating patterns, motifs, borders or large-scale wall art.

Texture paint adds visual depth and luxury feel that flat paint cannot achieve. A single feature wall in texture (Rs 80–300/sqft) transforms an entire room without renovating other walls. Stencil work allows custom personalisation — family names, mandalas, tribal motifs, geometric patterns.

Application Techniques (Step-by-Step)

Sand / Granular Texture

  1. Apply primer + 1 coat base emulsion (matte)
  2. Mix texture paint thoroughly
  3. Apply with thick-nap roller or special texture roller
  4. Allow to dry 24 hr
  5. Apply 1 coat sealer (clear / tinted) for protection

Stucco / Venetian Plaster

  1. Apply primer + base coat
  2. Apply first layer of stucco with steel trowel (1 mm thick)
  3. Wait 6–8 hr for partial drying
  4. Apply second layer at 45° angle to first, working in motion
  5. Burnish with clean trowel for marble polish
  6. Apply wax or sealer for water resistance

Stencil Pattern

  1. Paint base coat in chosen colour
  2. Position stencil template, fix with masking tape
  3. Apply contrast colour paint with sponge / stippling brush
  4. Use minimal paint to prevent bleeding under stencil
  5. Carefully lift stencil while paint still wet
  6. Re-position for next pattern, align with registration marks

Metallic / Pearl Finish

  1. Apply primer + 1 coat base colour (often dark, contrasting)
  2. Apply 1–2 coats metallic / pearl topcoat using brush
  3. Use cross-hatching strokes for shimmer effect
  4. Apply clear sealer for protection

Limewash / Suede

  1. Apply primer + base emulsion
  2. Apply limewash / suede paint with large brush
  3. Cross-brush in random multi-directional strokes
  4. Allow to dry, apply second coat similarly

Conclusion

Texture and stencil paints are the ultimate decorative paint category — transforming plain walls into stunning 3D feature walls that elevate interior aesthetics dramatically. From the rustic Sahara of Asian Royale Play to the luxurious Venetian polished plaster, from intricate mandala stencils to glittering metallic finishes, this paint category offers unlimited design possibilities.

The key principles:

For the other three walls of the same room, use premium interior emulsion paint in a complementary colour. For exteriors, look at decorative exterior weatherproof paints; for budget interior options, see distemper.
