Distemper — Complete Guide
Distemper is an economical water-thinnable wall paint consisting of pigments and binders dispersed in water. It is the most popular budget interior paint in India, used in homes, schools, government buildings, godowns, factories, hostels and rental properties for decades. With matte finish, easy application and very low cost (Rs 3–7 / sqft), distemper remains the workhorse of large-area painting.
Distemper paints are governed by IS 427 (Oil Bound Distemper), IS 428 (Distemper, Dry Powder). Indian leaders: Asian Paints (Tractor Acrylic / OBD), Berger Paints (Bison OBD / Acrylic), Nerolac (Beauty / Pearl), Dulux (Promise), Shalimar (Superlac), Indigo Paints.
What is Distemper?
Traditional distemper is a mixture of chalk (calcium carbonate) as pigment + filler, with a binder of animal glue or casein dispersed in water. Modern distempers use synthetic binders — either drying oils (alkyd) or acrylic emulsions. Application produces a matte, opaque, soft chalky film with moderate washability (better with acrylic).
Distemper is technically inferior to emulsion paint but unbeatable on cost (~30% of emulsion price). For tenants, low-budget projects, godowns and frequent re-painting cycles, distemper remains the practical choice. Modern Acrylic Distemper is essentially a low-end interior emulsion in disguise.

Common Defects & Solutions
| Defect | Cause | Remedy |
| Patchy coverage | Insufficient mixing / thinning | Mix well, apply 2 thin coats |
| Brush marks visible | Thick paint / dry brushing | Add 20% water, work wet edge |
| Chalking / powdery | Over-thinning, low-quality paint | Use 20% water max |
| Flaking / peeling | No primer, oily wall | Apply primer, clean surface |
| Yellowing | OBD aging, smoke / oil exposure | Re-paint with acrylic distemper |
| Stains showing through | No primer for stains | Apply stain-blocking primer first |
| Mould / fungus growth | Damp wall, no anti-microbial | Fix dampness, use anti-fungal distemper |
| Colour fading | Cheap pigments, UV exposure | Use premium brand; don’t use outdoors |
Best Practices
- Always apply primer for long-lasting results (saves repaint cost)
- Use Acrylic Distemper over OBD where budget allows (better lifespan)
- Apply 2 coats minimum (never single coat)
- Thin with water 20–30% for first coat, 15–25% for second
- Apply second coat at right angle to first (for full coverage)
- Use 9-inch nap roller for large surfaces, 50 mm brush for cutting
- Maintain 25°C temperature, < 85% RH during application
- Avoid painting in direct hot sun (uneven drying)
- Store in cool dry place, sealed
- Use within 12 months of manufacture
- Use cement-resistant variant on fresh plaster
- For institutional use, opt for anti-microbial variant
- Cover floor with old newspaper / plastic sheet
- Mask switches, fittings with masking tape
- Maintain wet edge while painting (avoid lap marks)
- Keep small extra tin for future touch-ups

Conclusion
Distemper remains the budget paint workhorse of Indian construction — affordable, easy to apply, available in many colours, and suitable for the majority of low-traffic interior surfaces. For rental homes, government buildings, schools, godowns and frequent re-painting cycles, distemper offers unbeatable value at Rs 3–7 per sqft.
For premium homes and long-life paint jobs (7–10 years), upgrade to interior emulsion paint — the extra Rs 5–10/sqft pays back through 3x longer lifespan, washability and richer colours. For exterior walls, use exterior weatherproof paint. Always apply primer first for best adhesion; use wall putty for the smoothest finish.
