Exterior Weatherproof Paint — Complete Guide

Exterior Weatherproof Paint is a specialised water-based paint formulated for outside walls of buildings to withstand harsh weather — intense UV sunshine, heavy monsoon rain, humidity, pollution, dust, fungus and salt-spray. The most popular brands in India are Asian Paints Apex (Ultima, Ultima Allura, Ultima Protek), Berger WeatherCoat (Long Life, Anti-Dust, All Guard), Dulux Weathershield (Powerflexx, Max), Nerolac Excel Top Guard, JSW Halo Exterior.

Premium exterior paints carry 5–15 year warranties against fading, peeling, flaking and algae growth. They are governed by IS 15489 (Plastic Emulsion Paint) and IS 5410 (Cement Paint).

What is Exterior Weatherproof Paint?

Exterior weatherproof paint is a 100% acrylic, silicone-modified acrylic, polyurethane-modified or elastomeric water-based paint. Compared to interior emulsions, it has:

A premium exterior paint like Asian Apex Ultima can last 7–10 years on a south-facing Indian wall without major colour fade — vs ordinary cement paint which lasts only 2–3 years. The Rs 25–40/sqft initial cost saves Rs 60–100/sqft over 10 years (multiple re-paint cycles).

Step-by-Step Application

  1. Surface Cure: Cement plaster cured 28 days minimum. New plaster MUST cure before exterior paint.
  2. Surface Cleaning: Scrape loose plaster, remove dust, fungus, oil, efflorescence. Wash with high-pressure water if needed.
  3. Crack Repair: Fill hairline cracks with crack filler / acrylic putty. Fill structural cracks with epoxy.
  4. Damp / Leak Check: No active dampness, leaks. Fix waterproofing first.
  5. Exterior Wall Putty (Optional): Apply 1 coat exterior-grade wall putty if very rough plaster. Sand after dry.
  6. Primer: Apply 1 coat exterior alkali-resistant primer. Allow 4–6 hr drying.
  7. Paint Stirring: Stir thoroughly for 2–3 min
  8. Thinning: Add 30–40% water for first coat, 25–35% for second coat
  9. Cutting In: 50 mm brush along edges, parapet, windows, corners
  10. First Coat: Apply with roller or spray. Cover entire surface. Maintain wet edge.
  11. Drying: 4–6 hr between coats (longer in humid weather)
  12. Second Coat: Apply at right angles to first coat
  13. Inspection: Check for missed areas, drip marks, holidays
  14. Curing: 7 days before exposure to heavy rain; 14 days for full performance

Conclusion

Exterior weatherproof paint is the most underrated investment in building protection. For Rs 60–100/sqft (premium system), you get 7–15 years of UV-resistant, water-repellent, algae-resistant, beautiful protection — saving Rs 200+/sqft over the building’s lifetime through avoided re-paints and structural damage prevention.

Key recommendations by climate zone:

Always pair with exterior primer, exterior-grade wall putty, and use a single brand system for warranty coverage. For decorative facades, see texture & stencil paint; for budget option (compound walls only), use cement paint or distemper; for interior walls, use interior emulsion paint.
