Interior Emulsion Paint — Complete Guide
Interior Emulsion Paint is a water-based acrylic / vinyl-acrylic paint formulated specifically for interior walls and ceilings of homes, offices, hotels, hospitals and commercial spaces. It is the dominant premium interior paint category in India, valued for its rich finishes (matte, eggshell, satin, silk, semi-gloss), durability (7–10 year lifespan), 5000+ colour shades, washability (1000s of wipes), low odour and low VOC content.
Indian emulsion paints are governed by IS 15489 (Plastic Emulsion Paint — Specification). Indian leaders: Asian Paints (Royale, Premium, Apex), Berger Paints (Silk, Easy Clean), Dulux (Velvet Touch, Aquatech), Nerolac (Pearl), Indigo Paints (Bright), Shalimar (Coral), JSW Paints (Halo).
What is Interior Emulsion Paint?
Interior emulsion paint is a colloidal dispersion of solid polymer particles (acrylic emulsion or vinyl-acrylic copolymer) in water, along with pigments, extenders, additives, biocides and rheology modifiers. When applied, the water evaporates and the polymer particles coalesce into a continuous, flexible, washable film that bonds firmly to the substrate.
Modern premium emulsions like Asian Royale and Berger Silk offer 100% acrylic binders, anti-bacterial properties, virtually zero VOC, washability of 10,000+ scrubs, and warranty up to 10 years. Total cost: Rs 10–25 per sqft (2 coats, all-in) — the gold standard of interior paint.

Common Defects & Solutions
| Defect | Cause | Remedy |
| Patchy / uneven colour | Insufficient mixing, varying putty thickness | Mix paint thoroughly, apply 2 coats |
| Roller marks | Dry rolling, too thick paint | Maintain wet edge, thin paint 20% |
| Sagging | Over-application | Apply thin coats, 2× coverage |
| Brush marks | Wrong brush type, drag application | Use soft nylon brush, work fast |
| Peeling | Damp wall, no primer | Fix damp, apply primer first |
| Cracking | Plaster cracks, thick coat | Use crack filler, thin coats |
| Yellowing | Smoke / nicotine staining, age | Re-paint with stain blocker first |
| Mould / fungus | Damp wall, no biocide | Use anti-fungal emulsion, fix moisture |
| Bubbling | Trapped air, over-mixing | Mix slowly, defoam with light water |
| Lap marks (visible joints) | Slow drying, not maintaining wet edge | Work in vertical strips, fast pace |
| Colour drift | Mixing different batches | Use one batch / lot for entire room |
Best Practices
- Use complete paint system: putty + primer + emulsion (same brand for warranty)
- Buy from authorised dealer (counterfeit avoidance)
- Note batch / lot number for entire room (colour consistency)
- Check manufacturing date (use within 18 months)
- Use professional tinting machine for shade matching
- Test paint on small area first — check shade in different light
- Apply 2 coats minimum (never 1 coat for premium finish)
- Maintain wet edge while painting (avoid lap marks)
- Use 9-inch roller for walls, 50 mm brush for cutting
- Maintain 18–30°C temperature, < 80% RH during application
- Allow 4–6 hr between coats
- Allow 7 days full cure before heavy use
- Use stencil / masking tape for clean edges
- Cover floor with old newspaper / plastic sheet
- Use silk / satin finish for kitchens, kids’ rooms (washable)
- Use matte finish for living rooms (hides imperfections)
- Store sealed tin in cool dry place (off floor)
- Keep small extra tin for future touch-ups
- Wipe wall lightly with damp cloth weekly (extends lifespan)

Conclusion
Interior emulsion paint is the modern gold standard for home interiors in India. With 7–10 year lifespan, 5000+ shades, washability of 1000s+ scrubs, low-VOC formulations, and many finishes from matte to gloss, premium emulsions like Asian Royale, Berger Silk and Dulux Velvet Touch deliver outstanding value at Rs 38–72 per sqft (complete system).
For best results, always use the complete system: wall putty + primer + 2 coats of emulsion paint. For premium homes choose Royale / Silk / Velvet grades; for budget homes use Tractor / Bison; for rental properties or extremely budget-constrained projects, consider distemper. For exterior walls, use exterior weatherproof paint; for decorative accent walls, see texture & stencil paint.
