Terracotta Tiles (Facade Cladding) — Complete Guide

Terracotta cladding uses baked clay tiles, panels and extruded sections as a natural, breathable, durable facade. Modern extruded terracotta facade systems — flat tiles, louvers (baguettes), and jaali screens — are mounted on a ventilated rainscreen sub-frame to create elegant, sustainable, low-maintenance facades. Terracotta's natural earthy colours, thermal performance, and longevity make it a favourite for green / sustainable architecture, institutions, and premium buildings.

Terracotta cladding uses fired clay (related to IS 13801 / IS 2690). Major systems / brands: Terreal, NBK, Shildan (imported), Wienerberger, Jindal Mechno Bricks, Devson, GreenTek terracotta jaali.

What is Terracotta Cladding?

Terracotta cladding is made from natural clay extruded into hollow / solid sections and fired at high temperature (~1000–1200 °C). The result is a hard, durable, naturally-coloured ceramic element. Mounted on an aluminium / steel rail system as a ventilated rainscreen, it offers facade protection plus a breathable cavity for thermal & moisture management.

Lifespan50+ years

Fixing Method (Rainscreen)

  1. Fix aluminium / steel sub-frame (vertical rails) to wall via brackets
  2. Provide ventilated cavity (rainscreen) behind tiles
  3. Add insulation in cavity (optional)
  4. Mount terracotta tiles / louvers on rail clips / extrusions
  5. Maintain open / closed joints as designed
  6. Provide drainage & ventilation top & bottom
  7. Tiles are replaceable individually
Ventilated rainscreen benefit: The cavity behind terracotta drains rainwater, dries the wall, and reduces heat transfer — improving the building's thermal performance & durability. Tiles clip on, so any single tile can be replaced.

Conclusion

Terracotta cladding offers a natural, breathable, durable and sustainable facade with timeless earthy colours that never fade. Mounted as a ventilated rainscreen, it improves thermal performance & building durability, while louvers / baguettes add sun-shading and jaali screens add ventilated privacy. It is fire-safe (non-combustible) and lasts 50+ years, at a higher cost requiring engineered installation.
