HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) Cladding — Complete Guide

HPL (High-Pressure Laminate) — also called compact laminate or exterior grade laminate — is a dense, rigid, self-supporting panel made by fusing layers of kraft paper & decorative paper with resin under high heat & pressure. Exterior-grade HPL (EGS) has a weatherproof, UV-resistant double-hardened surface, making it a popular modern facade cladding. It offers excellent durability, impact resistance, and a vast range of solid colours, wood & stone finishes.

HPL follows EN 438 (High-Pressure Decorative Laminates). Major brands: Merino, Greenlam, Century, Alstone, Trespa (premium imported), Fundermax, Stylam, Virgo.

What is HPL?

HPL is manufactured by impregnating multiple kraft paper layers with phenolic resin + a decorative top layer with melamine resin, then pressing at ~1430 psi & ~150 °C. The result is a solid, homogeneous, very hard panel. Exterior HPL has a special weather-protective surface (PVDF / acrylic / EBC) for UV & weather resistance.

Conclusion

HPL cladding offers a durable, impact-resistant, weatherproof facade with the most realistic wood & stone finishes — ideal for modern elevations, rainscreen facades and balcony infills. Use exterior-grade (EGS) HPL for facades, FR grade for high-rise / public buildings, a proper ventilated aluminium sub-frame, and allow for thermal movement. It resists dents better than ACP and offers a warmer, more natural look.

For metallic facades, see ACP; for natural premium, stone / brick cladding; for real timber, wood cladding; for ceramic, terracotta tiles; for cement boards, fiber cement boards.
