Vinyl & LVT Flooring — Complete Guide

Vinyl and Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) flooring is the fastest-growing flooring category globally, valued for its waterproof nature, soft underfoot feel, hyper-realistic wood / stone designs, easy installation and dramatically lower cost than the materials it imitates. From hospital corridors to luxury hotel rooms, modern offices to budget-conscious homes, vinyl LVT has become the universal choice for performance + aesthetic + affordability.

Vinyl flooring is governed by EN 651 (Heterogeneous PVC), EN 649 (Homogeneous PVC), EN 12104 (Cork Vinyl) standards. Top brands include Armstrong, Tarkett, Welspun, Pergo, LG Hausys, Mohawk, Wonder Vinyl, Action TESA.

What is Vinyl / LVT Flooring?

Vinyl flooring is a synthetic resilient floor made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin combined with stabilisers, plasticisers, fillers and pigments. It is manufactured in three main forms:

Modern LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile/Plank) has revolutionised flooring with 100% waterproof construction, photographic wood/stone realism, click-lock floating installation in a single day, and 15–25 year warranties. SPC (Stone Polymer Composite) and WPC (Wood Polymer Composite) variants offer rigid-core stability suitable for any sub-floor.

LVT Construction (Premium 4-Layer)

  1. UV-Cured Polyurethane Top Coat: Scratch and stain resistance
  2. Wear Layer (0.3–0.7 mm): Clear vinyl with aluminium oxide for durability
  3. Decor Layer: Photo-printed design (wood / stone / tile)
  4. Core / Backing: PVC, SPC, or WPC for stability
  5. Underlay Backing (Optional): Foam / cork for acoustic dampening

Installation Methods

1. Click-Lock Floating (LVT / SPC / WPC)

2. Glue-Down (Sheet, VCT, LVT)

3. Loose-Lay (Sheet, LVT)

4. Heat-Welded Sheet Vinyl

Step-by-Step Click-Lock LVT Installation

  1. Substrate Check: Level (max 3 mm in 1 m), dry, clean, smooth
  2. Moisture Test: Concrete < 4% MC, screed < 2%
  3. Acclimatisation: 24–48 hr in installation room
  4. Vapour Barrier: 0.2 mm polyethylene on concrete
  5. Underlay: 1–2 mm IXPE / cork foam (some LVT has built-in underlay)
  6. Layout: Plan first row to avoid thin cuts at last row
  7. First Plank: Place with 6–8 mm expansion gap from walls
  8. Click Lock: Angle into previous plank, click down at 30°
  9. Stagger Joints: Min 300 mm offset between rows
  10. Cutting: Score with utility knife and snap; or fine saw
  11. Pipes / Obstacles: Cut precise holes with scissors / drill
  12. Around Door Frames: Undercut frames or trim plank
  13. Maintain Expansion Gap: 6–8 mm at all walls
  14. Transitions: T-bar at room transitions
  15. Skirting: Fix to wall (not floor)
  16. Cleanup: Vacuum, damp mop

Conclusion

Vinyl & LVT flooring is the most versatile flooring category in modern construction. From budget sheet vinyl (Rs 30/sqft) to luxury Karndean LVT (Rs 600/sqft), this material covers virtually every use case — with the unique advantage of being 100% waterproof, soft underfoot, slip-resistant, and easy to install.

Recommendations by use:

Compare with laminate (cheaper but not waterproof), engineered wood (real wood premium), or vitrified tiles (hard surface). For commercial heavy-duty industrial floors, see epoxy flooring.
