Laminate Flooring — Complete Guide
Laminate flooring is an engineered composite floor consisting of an HDF (High-Density Fibreboard) core overlaid with a photo-realistic decorative paper printed to look like real wood (or stone / tile) and topped with a tough transparent overlay of aluminium oxide melamine. The result: a beautiful wood-look floor at 30–50% the cost of real engineered wood, with click-lock installation that allows DIY laying in a single day.
Laminate has dominated the affordable wood-look segment in India since 2005 and is governed by EN 13329 (European Laminate Floor Standard). Top brands include Pergo, Action TESA, Greenply, Greenlam, Egger, Krono, AGT, Quickstep, Tarkett, Welspun.
What is Laminate Flooring?
Laminate flooring is constructed in 4 layers:
- Wear Layer (Overlay): Transparent melamine + aluminium oxide for scratch / wear resistance
- Decor Layer: High-resolution photo-printed paper (wood / stone / tile design)
- HDF Core: High-Density Fibreboard (800–1000 kg/m³) for strength & stability
- Backing / Balance Layer: Moisture-resistant paper preventing warping
Laminate is NOT real wood — it’s a digital wood-photograph on HDF core. Modern laminate (Pergo Original, AC5) is so realistic in look and texture that only close inspection reveals the difference from engineered wood. AC ratings (1–6) determine durability for various applications.
AC Ratings (Abrasion Class) — Critical for Selection
| AC Rating | Wear Resistance | Use Class | Application |
| AC1 | Light | Residential Light (Class 21) | Bedroom only (rare) |
| AC2 | Moderate | Residential Standard (Class 22) | Bedrooms, dining |
| AC3 | Heavy | Residential Heavy / Commercial Light (Class 23/31) | All residential rooms, small office |
| AC4 | Heavy Commercial (Class 32) | Heavy use | Heavy residential, office, shop |
| AC5 | Public / Heavy Commercial (Class 33) | Public spaces | Retail, hotel lobby, mall corridor |
| AC6 | Extreme Commercial (Class 34) | Airport-level | Airports, stations, large public |
For Indian homes, choose minimum AC3 (Class 23). For high-traffic living rooms with kids and pets, choose AC4. For shops / offices / hotel rooms, choose AC4 or AC5.

Step-by-Step Installation
- Substrate Check: Concrete / tile / wood floor — must be level (max 3 mm variation in 1 m), dry, clean
- Moisture Test: Concrete < 4%, screed < 2%
- Acclimatisation: Store laminate boxes flat in room for 48 hr
- Tools Required: Spacers, tapping block, pull bar, hammer, measuring tape, fine-tooth saw / circular saw
- Vapour Barrier: Lay 0.2 mm polyethylene sheet on concrete (overlap 200 mm)
- Underlay: Lay 2–3 mm IXPE foam underlay (taped joints)
- Layout Plan: Plan rows so first & last plank are > 50 mm wide (avoid thin strips)
- Direction: Lay planks parallel to longest wall or main light source
- First Plank: Place tongue side against wall with 10 mm spacer for expansion
- Click Lock: Angle plank end into previous, click down at 30°, lay flat
- Tapping: Use tapping block + hammer to close joints (never hit plank directly)
- Stagger Joints: Cut next row first plank to minimum 300 mm offset
- Cut Last Plank: Measure and cut with fine-tooth saw (face up for hand saw, face down for circular saw)
- Around Pipes: Cut precise holes 16 mm larger than pipe diameter
- Door Frames: Undercut door frames using oscillating tool to slide laminate under
- Transitions: Install T-bar / threshold at room transitions
- Final Inspection: Walk over floor, check level, gaps, sounds
- Skirting: Install MDF / wooden skirting (fixed to wall, NOT to floor)
- Cleanup: Vacuum dust, slightly damp mop with laminate cleaner

- Check manufacturer warranty terms (Pergo, Egger offer 20–25 years residential)
- Acclimatise planks 48 hours in installation room
- Ensure perfectly level sub-floor (max 3 mm in 1 m)
- Always use vapour barrier on concrete sub-floor
- Quality underlay matters (foam 2–3 mm with vapour barrier)
- Maintain 10–12 mm expansion gap at all walls
- Stagger plank joints minimum 300 mm
- Avoid water mopping — use damp cloth only
- Use felt pads under furniture legs
- Place door mats at entrances to reduce sand abrasion
- Wipe spills immediately
- Avoid steam mops (damage seams)
- Don’t use wax / polish on laminate (causes streaks)
- Use only manufacturer-approved cleaners
- Trim pet claws regularly
- Use chair mats under rolling office chairs
- Avoid prolonged direct sun (use curtains)
- For wet areas, choose certified waterproof grade only
- Keep 1 box extra for future plank replacement
Common Defects & Solutions
| Defect | Cause | Remedy |
| Joints opening up | Insufficient expansion gap, humidity drop | Add humidifier, re-lay with proper gaps |
| Buckling / lifting | Water damage, expansion blocked | Replace affected planks, ensure gaps |
| Hollow sound | Uneven sub-floor, no underlay | Level sub-floor, use quality underlay |
| Chipped edges | Heavy impact, weak joints | Replace affected planks |
| Scratched surface | Sand, pet claws, dragging | Use felt pads, repair pen for minor |
| Swelling at joints | Water seepage | Wipe water immediately; replace if swelled |
| Squeaking | Underlay too thick / wrong type | Use specified underlay thickness |
| Fading colour | UV exposure | Use blackout curtains |
| Click failure | Poor quality, improper installation | Buy from reputed brand, follow installation guide |

Laminate flooring offers the best wood-look value in modern Indian flooring. At Rs 110–350 per sqft total (vs Rs 500–2500 for real wood), AC4-AC5 premium laminate gives 10–25 year service life with near-identical aesthetics. Click-lock installation makes it DIY-friendly — 1000 sqft in a single day.
Recommendations by use:
- Bedrooms (low traffic): AC3, 8–10 mm, Indian brands
- Living room: AC4, 10–12 mm, premium brands (Pergo Original, Egger Home)
- Office / commercial: AC4–AC5, 12–14 mm (Pergo Public, Quickstep)
- Kitchen / wet areas: Waterproof laminate (or use vinyl LVT)
- Hotel / hostel: AC4, 12 mm with acoustic underlay
Compare with real wood (engineered wood), tile alternatives (vitrified tiles), or wet-area options (vinyl LVT) before deciding. For ultimate luxury, see marble & granite; for heritage Indian aesthetic, see mosaic / IPS.
