A Distribution Board (DB) — also called a consumer unit, panel board or fuse box — is the central hub that receives the incoming electrical supply and distributes it to various circuits in the building, each protected by its own MCB / RCCB. It is the heart of the electrical installation: every copper wire circuit originates here, and all protection devices are housed inside it.
Indian distribution boards are governed by IS 8623 (Low-Voltage Switchgear & Controlgear Assemblies) aligned with IEC 61439. Major brands: Legrand, Schneider Electric, Havells, ABB, Hager, Siemens, L&T, Polycab, C&S Electric, GM.
The DB performs three core functions:
It also provides a common neutral link and earth link, and a single isolation point (main switch / incomer) to shut off the whole installation.
| Type | Full Name | Supply | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPN DB | Single Pole & Neutral | Single phase (230 V) | Small homes, flats |
| DPN / DP DB | Double Pole & Neutral | Single phase | Homes with main DP isolation |
| TPN DB | Triple Pole & Neutral | Three phase (415 V) | Large homes, commercial, distributes 3-phase to single-phase outgoing |
| VTPN DB | Vertical Triple Pole & Neutral | Three phase | Vertical busbar, more outgoing ways |
| HTPN DB | Horizontal Triple Pole & Neutral | Three phase | Horizontal busbar layout |
| Phase Selector DB | — | Three phase | Switch between phases (rural / unstable supply) |
| MCB DB (consumer unit) | — | Single phase | Standard residential |
| PPI / Pan Assembly | — | Various | Pre-wired panel |
"Ways" = number of outgoing single-pole MCB positions. Common sizes:
| Type | Ways | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| SPN | 4, 6, 8, 12, 16 way | 1 BHK to large homes |
| TPN | 4, 6, 8, 12 way (x3 phases) | Large homes, offices |

The distribution board is the command centre of a building's electrical system. For Indian homes, choose an ISI-marked double-door SPN DB sized with 20–30% spare ways, fit a 30 mA RCCB main incomer plus correctly-rated MCBs per circuit, use copper busbars, label every circuit, and connect the earth link to a sound earthing system.
The DB houses the MCB / RCCB / isolators that protect copper wire circuits running through conduits to switches & sockets, powering LED lights and ceiling fans, all anchored by a reliable earthing system.
