Copper wires are the backbone of every building's electrical system. House wiring cables consist of one or more annealed electrolytic copper conductors covered with PVC / FR / FRLS / XLPE insulation. The conductor cross-sectional area — commonly 1.0, 1.5, 2.5, 4, 6 and 10 sq mm — determines the current-carrying capacity and which circuit the wire is used for (lighting, power sockets, AC, geyser, sub-main).
Indian house wiring cables are governed by IS 694 (PVC Insulated Cables for Working Voltages up to 1100 V) and IS 8130 (Conductors). Major Indian brands: Polycab, Finolex, Havells, KEI, RR Kabel, V-Guard, Anchor (Panasonic), Syska, GM, Goldmedal.

| Use in House Wiring | Standard / preferred | Only for service mains / large feeders |
For internal house wiring, copper is universally preferred for safety, reliability and longevity. Aluminium is used only for large-section service entrance / sub-main cables.
| Size (sq mm) | Current Rating (approx) | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| 0.75 / 1.0 | 7–11 A | Light points, fan, doorbell, signal |
| 1.5 | 14–16 A | Lighting circuits, fans, 5A sockets |
| 2.5 | 20–21 A | Power sockets (5/15A), general power circuits |
| 4.0 | 26–28 A | Geyser, AC (1–1.5 ton), microwave |
| 6.0 | 33–36 A | AC (2 ton), kitchen sub-circuit, water heater |
| 10 | 45–50 A | Sub-main, DB feeder, heavy appliances |
| 16 | 63–66 A | Main supply, sub-DB feeder |
| 25 / 35 | 85–110 A | Service main / incomer |
| Grade | Full Name | Property | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| PVC | Polyvinyl Chloride | Standard insulation | General wiring (basic) |
| FR | Flame Retardant | Resists flame spread | Most home wiring (standard now) |
| FRLS | Flame Retardant Low Smoke | Less smoke + acid gas on burning | Homes, offices (recommended) |
| HR-FR | Heat Resistant Flame Retardant | Withstands 85–105 °C | Hot climate, high-load |
| HFFR / ZHFR | Halogen-Free Flame Retardant | Zero halogen, minimal toxic smoke | Hospitals, malls, theatres, IT |
| XLPE | Cross-Linked Polyethylene | Higher temp (90 °C), better insulation | Power cables, sub-mains |
| Lead-Free / RoHS | Eco compound | No lead stabiliser | Green buildings |
For modern Indian homes, FRLS or HR-FRLS copper wire is the standard recommendation. For public buildings (hospitals, malls, theatres), HFFR / Zero-Halogen is mandated by fire codes.
For long cable runs, upsize the conductor to keep voltage drop within limits — this prevents dim lights, overheating, and appliance malfunction. Bundle derating (multiple cables in one conduit) and ambient temperature also reduce effective capacity.

Copper wire is the safe, reliable choice for all internal house wiring. The practical sizing for Indian homes: 1.5 sq mm for lighting & fans, 2.5 sq mm for power sockets, 4–6 sq mm for AC & geysers, and 10 sq mm for sub-mains — always FRLS grade minimum, ISI-marked. Verify coil weight, use the correct colour code, and size for voltage drop on long runs.
Copper wires run inside PVC conduits & trunking, terminate at modular switches & sockets, are protected by MCB / RCCB / isolators in distribution boards, power LED lights and ceiling fans, and connect to earthing materials for safety.
