Armstrong / Grid (T-Grid) Ceilings — Complete Guide

Grid ceilings — commonly called Armstrong ceilings after the pioneering brand — are modular suspended ceilings made of lay-in tiles dropped into an exposed or concealed T-grid framework hung from the slab. They are the standard ceiling for offices, commercial spaces, hospitals, schools, malls and showrooms because the removable tiles give instant access to services (wiring, ducts, sprinklers), good acoustics, and a clean modular look. Tiles are typically mineral fibre, metal, or gypsum.

Grid ceilings follow EN 13964 (Suspended Ceilings). Major brands: Armstrong, Saint-Gobain Ecophon, USG Boral, Gyproc, Hunter Douglas, Aerolite, Anutone, Daiken.

What is a Grid Ceiling?

A grid ceiling consists of a metal T-grid suspended from the soffit by hanger wires / rods, forming a modular grid (typically 600x600 mm or 600x1200 mm). Pre-finished ceiling tiles simply lay into the grid — no painting, no wet work. Any tile can be lifted for access to the plenum above.

Where to Use

Key advantage — access: The big reason grid ceilings dominate offices is removable tiles — you can lift any tile to access wiring, ducts, sprinklers and maintenance, unlike fixed gypsum / POP ceilings.

Installation Process

  1. Mark ceiling level around perimeter (laser)
  2. Fix wall angle / perimeter trim to walls
  3. Install hanger wires / rods from slab (anchors at grid intersections)
  4. Suspend main runners (level)
  5. Clip in cross tees to form 600x600 / 600x1200 grid
  6. Level the entire grid carefully
  7. Lay ceiling tiles into grid
  8. Integrate light fittings, AC diffusers, sprinklers
  9. Add hold-down clips if required
  10. Cut perimeter / edge tiles to fit

Conclusion

Grid / Armstrong ceilings are the standard for offices and commercial spaces — modular, fast to install, acoustically good, and uniquely offering instant service access via removable tiles. Choose acoustic mineral fibre tiles for quiet workspaces, humidity-resistant or metal tiles for wet / hospital areas, and galvanised grid for durability. Their functional look makes them ideal for commercial but less so for premium homes.

For tile material options, see metal & mineral fibre tiles; for residential / designer ceilings, see gypsum boards, POP or wooden ceiling; for budget / wet areas, PVC panels. Add glass wool above for acoustic comfort.
