📘 Aim
To determine the standard (normal) consistency of cement paste using the Vicat Apparatus.
⚙️ Apparatus Required
- Vicat Apparatus
- Plunger (10 mm diameter, 50 mm long)
- Measuring cylinder
- Stopwatch
- Weighing balance (accurate to 1 g)
- Trowel
📏 Theory
The standard consistency of cement is the percentage of water required to prepare a cement paste that allows the Vicat plunger to penetrate 33–35 mm from the top of the mould. This value is essential for conducting other cement tests like setting time, soundness, and compressive strength.
🧮 Formula
P = (W / C) × 100
- P = Standard consistency (%)
- W = Weight of water (g)
- C = Weight of cement (g)
🧪 Procedure
- Take 400 g of cement in a clean tray.
- Add about 25% water by weight of cement and mix thoroughly for 3–5 minutes.
- Quickly fill the Vicat mould with the paste and smooth the surface.
- Place the mould under the Vicat plunger and lower it gently until it just touches the surface.
- Release the plunger and note the penetration depth.
- Repeat the procedure with varying water percentages (26%, 27%, 28%, etc.) until the plunger penetrates 33–35 mm from the top.
